Major spoiler warning. This article names endings, key narrative concepts (Cycle 13, Booster Ring) and route logic. If you have not finished a first run, start with our spoiler-free beginner guide.
Directive 8020 offers 5 ending families and 7+ distinct ending names across an 8-episode narrative. The math behind: 44 possible deaths and 65 collectibles, both of which weigh on routes and unlock specific final scenes.
The 5 ending families
The names you need to know. Each family maps to a precise crew and mission state.
- Homeward Bound — the crew survival route, generally read as the best ending for character fans.
- Docked — Cassiopeia and Booster Ring focus, mission objective achieved.
- Mask Off — the mimic reveal shapes the resolution.
- Hitchhiker — a hidden passenger contaminates the run; heavy consequences.
- Massacre — the worst ending, multiple deaths.
- Not Alone — ambiguous, continuation-flavoured.
- Horror — a darker variant, often born from stacked failures.
Cycle 13 and Booster Ring
Two concepts shape the finale:
- Cycle 13 is tied to the narrative resolution. Understanding what it stands for reframes the last chapters.
- The Booster Ring is the late-game mission objective. Reaching or missing it steers entire ending families.
The mechanics that decide
Five levers send you toward a family:
- Crew survival: who is still standing in episode 8.
- Mimic identification: confirmed or not, with or without evidence.
- Mission preservation: is the Booster Ring reached in usable conditions.
- Relationships and trust: bonds held until the end weigh on final scenes.
- Evidence collected and Turning Points played cleanly.
Aiming for the best ending
To maximise your shot at Homeward Bound or a clean Docked:
- Keep characters together whenever possible.
- Verify before trusting: evidence-based trust beats gut feeling.
- Preserve relationships, even in throwaway dialogues.
- Hunt clues in every quiet zone.
- Land your QTEs and stealth segments; failures stack fast.
If your ending feels wrong
Lean on Turning Points and the Story Tree. Identify the earliest pivot, change a single decision, watch the cascade. Editing too late will not swing the family.
Family ranking: which one to chase first?
For trophy hunters, the recommended order is Homeward Bound then Docked, because they consolidate a clean route built on preserved relationships and gathered evidence. Once that base is set, swing toward Mask Off (which hinges on reveal timing) and Hitchhiker (which needs a run where contamination stays hidden long enough). Save Massacre, Not Alone and Horror for last: these variants emerge from failure chains and trigger naturally when you play against caution on purpose.
Stats worth remembering
To frame your runs: 8 episodes, 5 playable characters involved, 5 ending families and 7+ names, 44 possible deaths, 65 collectibles. Keep a log with your run, the character who dies and the Turning Point that triggered it. It saves hours.
