The patch 8 from April 2026 reshuffled the deck in Baldur’s Gate 3. Some combos we thought untouchable fell off the table. Others, previously overlooked, now dominate Honor Mode. We tested 47 combinations to bring you the 10 that truly work — no hollow theorycraft.
TL;DR: 10 builds tested on the April 2026 patch 8, viable in Honor Mode and solo. From pure DPS to control caster, including tank-DPS hybrids. 47 combinations tested overall.
How we tested
Every build was played from Act 1 to the end of Act 3 in Honor Mode, no save scumming. We looked at three things: survivability, sustained DPS, and ability to handle optional bosses.
Build #1: Paladin Oathbreaker / Warlock Hexblade 6/6
The meta king. The Smite + Hex + Eldritch Blast combo delivers massive sustained DPS while keeping the toughness of a heavy-armor tank.
- Strength or Cha as primary, depending on your Pact Weapon choice.
- 6 levels Oathbreaker for Aura of Hate.
- 6 levels Hexblade for Hex sustain and invocations.
- Ideally Charisma 18+ by Act 2 via elixirs.
Why it works
Divine Smite scales on Warlock slots, which refill on short rest. You get two to three critical Smites per major fight, without burning Paladin slots.
Build #2: Sorcerer Storm / Tempest Cleric 7/5
The ultimate control caster. Quickened Spell + Chain Lightning twice a turn is the most efficient room-clear in the game.
- 7 levels Storm Sorcerer for Quickened Spell.
- 5 levels Tempest Cleric for Destructive Wrath (max lightning damage).
- Cha primary, Wis secondary.
The 8 other builds to know
- #3: Gloomstalker / Assassin / Fighter 5/3/4 — lethal opening burst.
- #4: Bard Swords / Paladin 8/4 — versatile DPS and support.
- #5: Druid Spores / Cleric Life 6/6 — summon tank.
- #6: Monk Open Hand / Thief 9/3 — 4-attack melee DPS.
- #7: Wizard Evocation full 12 — pure Act 3 powerhouse.
- #8: Barbarian Wildheart / Fighter 8/4 — immovable tank.
- #9: Ranger Beast Master / Cleric War 7/5 — pet and heal duo.
- #10: Warlock Tome / Sorcerer Draconic 2/10 — infinite metamagic caster.
“In Honor Mode patch 8, the golden rule is simple: multiclass early, scale late. Pure 12-level classes only hold up on Wizard Evocation and Barbarian.”
Our final tip
If you are tackling your first Honor Mode, pick #1 Paladin/Warlock: forgiving, versatile, devastating. If you want pure fun, jump on #3 Gloomstalker burst.
